So currently I'm sat staring at a pig on the front a bottle. 'Mr Trotter's' from Lancaster's Brewery is one of the lesser known ales at my disposal, an accompaniment to the pork scratchings of the same name. One of the brains behind this marketing masterstroke (or gimmick depending on your cynicism), Matthew Fort, made the link that pigs like chestnuts, hence the theme and key ingredient.
According to their website, Lancaster Brewery are one of the largest microbreweries in the north west of England. By their own admission, they started life in a 'tired old shed' located on the outskirts of Lancaster (original name).
Fast forward to the present, the brewery has new premises with lots of specialist brewing kit. This is handy considering the number of beers on offer. Perhaps one of their more well known ales is 'Lancaster Black' which has numerous awards to its name.
The ale itself pours light brown and smooth, leaving a small head. Flavourings are sweet, fruity and nutty. The chestnuts really add a special something to this and I'm left with a satisfying aftertaste. I imagine this would taste even better if on draught! The ale may benefit from a more roasted taste perhaps, but overall I'm impressed with the intense flavourings on offer. The chestnuts more than compensate.
Cascade and brambling cross hops are prevalent, adding the much desired spice and bitter taste, whilst offering balance. The ale is drinkable and has a satisfying kick to it.
All in all, I'm impressed by 'Mr Trotter's' and would implore the curious and inquisitive to give this a try.
