McEwan's, Champion Ale.
Hey there, I'm Alex or "Hops" and this is my first posting after Clarkeys showing last week. Hope you all enjoy the review!
Beer Review - McEwan's Champion Ale Brewer: McEwan's Brewery ABV: 7.3% Awards: 'Award Winning' Aroma: Rich, Strong Style: Dark Ale Hey there, So for today's review I have an 'Award Winning' number from McEwans brewery, located in Scotland, called 'Champion'. Exactly what award the ale has won, I can't tell you since there seems to be no mention at all on either the bottle or the web. Once pouring the dark full bodied mass into a glass, I'm hit almost immediately by the strong 7.3% ABV. I'm also surprised by the big frothy head which nearly overflows the glass. Upon taking a sip, the ale is strong and hoppy with sweet fruity undertones. There's a lot going on here, I sense a hint of toffee, grapes and berries. The ale is almost dry, roasted and strangely spicy. For an off the shelf ale you can get in most supermarkets this ale has a satisfying taste, albeit with a bitter, slightly sour aftertaste which may not appeal to all. There is a slight musty smell to the ale but I feel this adds to the hoppiness. Its extremely drinkable, certainly belying the 7.3% ABV; I would say this is an ale to have as a one off though, since too many of these and It would become heavy and probably leave you feeling bloated (and likely pissed!). Some may find this ale too sweet and alcoholic but personally I like it as a one off beverage to drink by a roaring fire somewhere.
