I have often wondered if I can play with madness and today I get to find out with this offering from English Rockers Iron Maiden. At first I was sceptical, the thought of a bloke from a rock band brewing up a craft masterpiece. Well I've gotta hand it to old Bruce, the guy has produced a decent British pub ale here. I shouldn't be surprised really since Bruce Dickinson is somewhat of a Polymath - Singer Songwriter, Author, Pilot, Radio DJ and a craft ale enthusiast it would seem. Yes I know... No need to rub it in for us normal folk!
So onto the business of reviewing the beer, I'm immediately struck by the maltiness and strong hoppy taste - There's a nice yeasty earthy bitterness to this brew. The beer flows a rich amber colour, is medium bodied in intensity with a slight zest of citrus and floral aroma. I also detect a subtle taste of caramel. The carbonation is good and head retention is somewhat unassuming. The label says there is a 'unique blend of Bobek, Goldings and Cascade hops' and I can definitely sense the Cascade's citrus, almost spicy dominance.
The beer obviously takes its name from the Iron Maiden song, moreover, for the more history inclined, the song is about The Charge of Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava in 1854, during which 600 British Cavalry were sent to their doom on miscommunicated orders of their commanding officer, Lord Raglan.
To summarise, This is a beer I could quite happily guzzle all day. Some may find it too watery, perhaps, but I like how drinkable this rich ale is.
